Horse(s)

Mid-day nap spot

Bye Nashville!

leaving/beginning

last minutes in the nashville apt.
bike is packed to the brim.
still need to wash the dishes in the sink. about to. and clean out the fridge.
sending off the rent checks for while i'm gone.
i'm going to get rained on today, the weather says. this will be common.
just remembered to put together a box of an extra set of clothes and a few books to send to maine for when i get there.  i have a feeling i'll be pretty tired of what i've packed otherwise.
so, did that.
took a hot shower.
used a real towel.
it's probably best to just finish up the last few things and escape this prep stage i've been in for a month.
...
just held the mail for a month.
i guess you can never really feel prepared at this moment.
going to leave asap.

less than a day

ok. almost ready. laying out all the stuff to take inventory.
I'll cover those stories soon enough.  i'll post on the gear so that if you ever want to do something like this you can learn from my 137 mistakes.  and because i spent way too much time thinking about this stuff and want to organize my thoughts here.
I did some preliminary route planning.  google maps only lets you make so many revisions to a single direction/trip, so i broke the map up into stages.  here they are:

nashville to blacksburg, va: http://bit.ly/ayN5GS
blacksburg to york, pa: http://bit.ly/bTKlTH
york to bass harbor, me: http://bit.ly/994U7j

the "bicycle" option in maps is only a few months old.  they just released it for android phones, but (b/c of the tensions between google and apple) have not yet released this 'layer' of the maps for the iphone. so, i'll get by.  they'll probably enable this right when the trip is over.  the blue ridge parkway section will be a breeze to navigate, and elsewhere i'll basically go east and then north.  it's that simple...

first post: prep

final two days before the trip.
just turned in the qualifying exams yesterday morning.
immediately transitioned my mind to the trip details. predictably, I need something to occupy my obsession.
just a few more things to get: electrolytes, first aid supplies, etc.
and i have to take pictures of all the philosophy book pages i'll be teaching this summer.
and mail a bunch of books back to Virginia Tech which I have had for too long. and the post office closed 5 minutes ago.
right now, after writing 70 pgs for the exams, I'm barely forming sentences.  as you can tell.
oh, and i have to go weed the garden i planted and henceforth neglected.
but first: a big bowl of pasta!
